Invasion Star on the Hood

Invasion Star on the HoodA new Star, more axle work, and engine item upgrades!

At long last, the hood is finished! This is PART 2 of adding the stencil markings to the hood with a brand new star with a big unveiling of the finished Jeep with new markings and axles! After that, I start work on trying to figure out what the clackity sound is coming from the rear of the Jeep by re-opening up the rear axle and diving into the carrier. This includes replacing the spider gears, side gears, and more. I also remove the pinion and check everything out before putting it all back together. Finally, I re-add the heat shield for the master cylinder and work on enhancing the engine with some new items.

1944 GPW #208102 JeepThe big moment… the first drive with new axles!

After weeks of work on replacing the post-war CJ axles with wartime GPW axles (that took over a year to completely restore), it’s the big moment as I take the Jeep for the first drive! But, not all is good as I hoped. In this update, I also replace the last front spring leaf plate that bent, and read the drive shafts after the restoration! Also, PART 1 of putting markings on the hood, and some other minor fixes to the Jeep!

The restored GPW AxlesAXLES FINISHED!

This past week was quite busy with lots of work done on the GPW front axle, and it’s FINALLY done bringing the restoration of the axles to a close! I installed the Tie Rods, prepped the brake lines, painted the axle, cleaned up some important things, added the brake lines, and greased it up! Also in this update, a quick update on the GPW hood and two original WW2 Jeep books I recently picked up.

Lots of projects this week making for quite the busy work! And I continue work on the front axle installing the RZeppa shafts, packing grease into the knuckle, installing the brake plates/drums, and adjusting the brakes!

GPW Replacement HoodHood history, painting along with kingpin/knuckle work!

This week was a crazy busy week with work on two major ongoing projects.. the GPW hood and the GPW front axle! This week I continued work removing paint and rust on the hood, did some historical recovery of hood numbers, and painted the hood. After finishing the rear axle last week, I began work on the front axle with one of the more tricky parts… the kingpin and knuckle installation. I go through a full tutorial on how to set those along with the dust shields!

Vehicles at the Old Town Tustin Veterans Day EventSmall projects, custom F Stamps, Hood work, and completing the rear axle!

This past week was a flurry of work on the Jeep in prep for the Veterans Day military vehicle and car show in Old Town Tustin, CA. That meant finishing some smaller projects that I’d been meaning to get around to (mostly cosmetic things). Some photos from the Veterans Day event and the 9 other Jeeps that showed up included. I continued work on the GPW hood and had a major setback. And I FINALLY finished the rear GPW axle! Work then began on the Front axle

Unrestored GPW hood test fitting on the JeepHood work, Firestone Spark Plugs, and Rear Axle work – Part 1!

This week’s update will be a two part post once again! I got quite a few things in the mail to continue my ongoing quest to correct post-war things on the Jeep, got more radioactive Firestone spark plugs, worked on the GPW hood including fixing some stress cracks, and fixed a stripped bolt hole in the rear axle hub with a Helicoil kit in this first part!

Original GPW hood being restored

Original GPW hood being restoredA slow week…

This week slowed down to a crawl as I’m in a bit of a waiting pattern for the next stages of the axle work. But I did work on some of the smaller items I purchased two weeks ago at the swap meet, and I continued (slow) work on restoring the original GPW hood.
